The adrenal function panel is a salivary test, like the male and female hormone panels. Our adrenal glands help us respond to stress by freeing up stored energy with the release of cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. These allow us to react with a “fight or flight” response that allows us to have the energy to run from danger or have the energy to fight whatever we may need to. Unfortunately the stressors of today often do not require us to run or fight, and generally last much longer than the stressors which required these reactions. This chronic release of stress hormones not only leave us feeling anxious, tired but wired or cause us to not be able to sleep, they can also interfere with the rest of our hormones. This creates a vicious circle of imbalance which can have a wide variety of effects on our body. For this test, four salivary samples are taken at four specific times during the day. These tests are analyzed for the salivary cortisol and help create a graph of what our body is doing during the course of a day. These values show us how well our adrenal glands, hypothalamus and pituitary gland are working in order to respond to stress. For more information visit Rocky Mountain Analytical
